Vietnam Career Development Speaker Series #5

The theme of the discussion this time is: Corporate career development: What is it like working for a global company?

Speakers will each make a brief presentation of their respective company and in the panel discussion that follows answer questions from the audience.

We expect panelists to share their experience about how they grow personally and professionally in the corporate environment in US companies. What the opportunities are and how best to seize them. What the challenges are and how best to handle them. How to reconcile “corporate greed” with “national interest” from an employee’s perspective?

Specifically, the students want to know how the companies train their employees from recruitment to later stages in the career path in the company. The incentive mechanism; Corporate culture and ethics; Community work; Employee bonding; Sports, etc.

The important goal is to inspire the students to do what many of them may think are impossible or unimportant in the present context in Vietnam.

About 350 students from Foreign Trade University in Hanoi will attend the event. The Vietnam Students Newspaper under the Central Youth Union is our Vietnam partner for the series.

Background: The US-ASEAN Business Council Board of Directors has requested that the Council conduct activities to engage future generations in ASEAN countries to help them build a peaceful and properous region. The Council’s “Career Development Program for Vietnamese Youths: How US companies can help” is one such activity.

In reality, for many years now, Council member companies have been running their individual programs to help young people in ASEAN develop the right skill set for the growing economies in the region.

The Council’s initiative to engage young people in Vietnam will not dilute or distract attention from those individual company programs but rather will enhance them by collating information and resources from these programs and present them in one convenient package to the target audience.

Career development guidance is of dire need in Vietnam. About 1.5 million young Vietnamese join the work force every year and the Vietnamese government has been struggling to find enough employment, much less high-quality jobs, for them. The irony is it is not because there are not enough jobs on the market, but it is because most of these young people do not have the right skill set required by businesses, both foreign and domestic, in Vietnam.

Council companies have a lot of expertise and resources to help Vietnam fill this void in their educational and vocational system. We can do that with the Council’s “Career Development Program for Vietnamese Youths: How US companies can help”.
