DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the launch of Mapping ASEAN: Achieving Peace\, Properity\, and Sustainability in Southeast Asia\, the recent book by Amb. David L. Carden (Ret.). The book describes\, or "maps"\, the many human and natural systems upon which the region depends\, how they relate and affect one another\, and the multilateral mechanism and approaches needed to manage both the opportunities and challenges they present. It has chapters on the US pivot to Asia\; how to take a systems approach to achieving ASEAN's goals\; the need to invest in ASEAN's people\, data and information\; the role of governance and the rule of law with regard to achieving ASEAN's goals\; the potential impact of climate change and environmental degradation\; China's role in the region and the South China Sea\; the role of the the private sector\; and the need for a new approach to diplomacy to complement the ones in use currently. Each of these chapters draws on Amb. L. Carden was the first resident U.S. ambassador to ASEAN. The approach taken by the U.S. Mission to ASEAN under his leadership was based on understanding\, promoting\, and protecting the human and natural systems upon which the region depends and earned him the U.S. Department of State's Superior Honor award. A former partner at the international law firm Jones Day\, Carden also serves as the chairman of the advisory board for the Center for Rural Engagement at Indiana University\, where he continues his work with communities to research and implement evidence-based\, scalable solutions to the challenges they face.
